The American administration of Democratic President Joe Biden is privately asking Ukraine to publicly demonstrate its openness to negotiations with Russia and to abandon dialogue with this country until the departure of Russian President Vladimir Putin from power, writes the American newspaper The Washington Post, cited by Reuters.

According to the American newspaper citing sources familiar with the internal discussions, this request from Washington is not aimed at forcing Kyiv to sit down at the negotiating table. This strategy is not a form of pressure on Ukraine, but is aimed at ensuring that the Ukrainian executive retains the necessary support from other countries that are suffering from the war in Ukraine due to inflation and the constant increase in energy prices. American and Ukrainian officials acknowledged that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s ban on negotiations with Putin has caused concern in parts of Europe, Africa and Latin America, where the consequences of the war for food and fuel are felt most acutely, the quoted publication writes.

  • “Ukraine fatigue is a real problem for some of our partners,” the American official said on condition of anonymity.

On October 4, Zelensky signed a decree officially declaring the prospect of any negotiations between Ukraine and Putin “impossible”, but left the door open for negotiations with the Russian Federation.

The National Security Council of the White House did not comment on the authenticity of the report, according to Reuters.

  • “We’ve said it before and we say it now: actions speak louder than words.
  • If Russia is willing to negotiate, it must stop its bombs and missiles and withdraw its forces from Ukraine. The Kremlin continues to escalate this war.
  • The Kremlin demonstrated its reluctance to seriously engage in negotiations even before launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” a State Department spokesman told Reuters.

The US official also recalled the words of Zelensky on Friday, who said: “We are ready for peace, for a fair and just peace, a formula that we have talked about many times.”

In his evening address to the Ukrainian people on Friday, Zelenskyi added: “The world knows what our position is. It is respect for the UN Charter, respect for our territorial integrity, respect for our people.”

When asked by EFE, the press secretary of the White House refused to comment on the information published by The Washington Post, writes Agerpres.

However, on Friday White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, who is visiting Kyiv, said that all the G7 industrialized countries (the US, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Japan and the UK) “will be at peace” as it also evident from their latest joint statement.

  • “From our point of view, the conversation we need to have within the international community regarding support for Ukraine is what are the conditions for a lasting and just peace,” Sullivan said, according to a transcript sent to EFE on Saturday.

Sullivan also reiterated that the United States will not allow Russia to remain in the territories it took from Ukraine by force or through so-called referenda, which have been questioned by the international community.
