Who will be its next general secretary? NATO; The race has begun and his successor is not ruled out Jens Stoltenberg to be a woman.
The race has begun for an official who will replace Jens Stoltenberg at the helm of NATO. The term of office of the Norwegian ends in the fall of 2023, more precisely in September next year. However, as Steven Erlanger writes in The New York Times, the behind-the-scenes processes of his succession are already “under way” and “battle lines” and rival “camps” are now in the process of being formed.
The New York Times’ chief diplomatic correspondent in Europe emphasizes that it’s still early and that the names of the candidates who are heard first tend to “burn out” along the way.
Referring to American sources, Erlanger, however, claims that one of the possible candidates for the post of Stoltenberg is 54-year-old current Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister of Canada Chrystia Freeland, a politician with Ukrainian roots, since her mother is from Ukraine. Freeland speaks English, French, Italian, Ukrainian and Russian. In the relatively recent past (2017-2019), he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada. She previously worked as a journalist and her husband is New York Times journalist Graham Bowley.

At the same time, however, possible European candidates began to emerge. In particular, Stephen Erlanger is referring to the 45-year-old Prime Minister of Estonia. Kaya Calas49-year-old President of Slovakia Zuzana Tsaputova and the 54-year-old former President of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic who was also the Croatian ambassador to Washington.

The name, which can be heard from Britain, belongs to the current Secretary of Defense. Ben Wallace.
As Steven Erlanger suggests, Chrystia Freeland may also have US support. However, it is worth noting that Canada is still far from NATO’s goal of 2% of GDP for the front of defense spending.
