
Pierre Soulages, oh French The abstract artist best known for his experiments with various shades of black has died at the age of 102, a museum dedicated to his life and work in his hometown of Rodez in southwest France said.
Soulages, who died in hospital last Tuesday night, according to museum director BenoĆ®t Decron, has been working exclusively with blacks since 1979, mostly on a series of works he called “Outrenoir” (“Beyond Black”).
Born on Christmas Eve 1919, Pierre Soulages also created the 104 stained glass windows that adorn the church of St. Foy in Conques in southwestern France.
