Quantity methane in the atmosphere increases with acceleration, according to his latest related research World Meteorological Organization (World Meteorological Organization – WMO).
Increasing levels methane According to the WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, 2020 and 2021 were the longest years since systematic record keeping began in 1983.
“Methane concentrations are not just rising, they are rising faster than ever,” says Stanford University professor Rob Jackson.
Methane is the second most important driver of climate change. It has a warming effect 80 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, notes the NY Times.
“Methane is the second biggest driver of climate change after carbon dioxide (CO2)… Most methane emissions come from the agriculture, waste and energy sectors,” says the European Parliament website (“Methane emissions and climate change: call for mandatory Goals’, October 2021).
Atmospheric methane increased by 15 parts per billion (ppb) in 2020 and 18 parts per billion (ppb) in 2021, according to the World Meteorological Organization.
Levels of two other major greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, also reached record levels in 2021, according to a WMO study. “The increase in carbon dioxide levels from 2020 to 2021 was greater than the average annual growth rate over the past decade,” the report said.
The concentration of carbon dioxide in 2021 was 415.7 parts per million (ppb), methane 1908 parts per billion (ppb) and nitrous oxide 334.5 parts per billion (ppb). These values correspond to 149%, 262% and 124% compared to pre-industrial levels of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, respectively.
The WMO report was published just a few weeks before the next UN climate conference. KS27 which is planned to be held in Egypt In November.
