a plane Russian fighter launched a missile near the plane British British Defense Minister Ben Wallace said on Thursday about the unarmed espionage that patrolled the international airspace over the Black Sea on September 29, Reuters reports.
Wallace told parliament that Russia blamed the problem on a technical fault and that British planes were now being escorted by fighter jets.
The head of Britain’s defense ministry also said it had suspended patrols after the incident and expressed its concerns to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
“In the reply of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, which was received on October 10, it was clarified that they had conducted an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, and stated that it was a technical malfunction of the SU-27 fighter,” he said. Wallace stated.
“They also acknowledged that the incident took place in international airspace.”
Britain agrees with Russia’s version
The British defense minister said he did not consider the missile launch to be a deliberate escalation.
“We don’t believe this was a deliberate escalation on the part of the Russians, our analysis would agree that it was a failure,” Wallace told parliament.
“However, it is a reminder of how dangerous things can be when you choose to use your fighter jets in the way the Russians have done over many periods of time.”
The patrols are now being escorted by fighter jets and British allies have been briefed on the incident, Wallace said.
