British businessman Graham Bonham-Carter has been arrested after the United States charged him with conspiring to violate sanctions imposed on Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, prosecutors said on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

Bonham-Carter was arrested in Great Britain, and the federal prosecutor’s office in Manhattan will seek his extradition. He was also charged with defrauding the financing of American real estate purchased by Deripaska and attempting to export Deripaska’s artwork to the United States.

An attorney for Bonham-Carter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The charges come as the US Justice Department seeks to pressure Russian oligarchs through sanctions and asset forfeitures to stop supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Bonham-Carter concealed the source of funding to support and manage Deripaska’s rich US assets in violation of international sanctions,” said Damian Williams, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan.
