The European Union summoned Russia’s representative to the bloc to condemn and reject Moscow’s illegal annexation of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhia, the bloc’s diplomatic office said on Tuesday, as cited by Reuters.

Russia announced these annexations on Friday after so-called “referendums” in the occupied territories of Ukraine. Western governments and Kyiv said the votes violated international law.

The EU said that during a meeting with Russia’s ChargĂ© d’affaires Kirill Logvinov on Monday, it called on Moscow to cancel its “illegal act” and unconditionally withdraw all troops from the entire territory of Ukraine.

“The EU does not and will never recognize this illegal annexation of Russia,” the bloc said in a statement.

“These decisions of Russia are null and void and cannot have any legal force,” the quoted source added

The upper house of the Russian parliament voted on Tuesday to approve the annexation of four Ukrainian regions, even though Moscow does not have full control over any of them.

Russian forces control only about 60 percent of Donetsk region and 70 percent of Zaporizhzhia, while Ukrainian forces have also advanced into Luhansk region, which Russian forces claimed full control of in July.
