French oil company TotalEnergies still operates in Russia and profits from the sale of gas condensate to Russia, which is later converted into kerosene for Russian military fighter jets, French newspaper Le Monde said on Wednesday. The group denies the allegations, Reuters reports.
The French oil company TotalEnergies, together with its local partner Novatek, manages a field from which gas condensate, a liquid hydrocarbon, is extracted, which is converted into kerosene and then used to fuel Russian fighter jets that bomb Ukrainian cities, Le Monde reports.
According to the French publication, the oil company TotalEnergies owns 49% of the shares of Terneftegaz, which manages this field, and 51% belongs to the large Russian gas producer Novatek.
According to information obtained by Le Monde from the energy market, the supply chain from the Terneftegaz-owned Thermokarst gas field in Siberia reaches two military air bases, Morozovsk and Malchevo, which host squadrons of multi-role fighter jets accused by non-governmental organizations. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said they bombed civilian targets in Ukraine, including the Mariupol theater in March, when nearly 600 people died.
France’s TotalEnergies on Wednesday denied a report by Le Monde on Wednesday that the gas condensate, which is turned into jet fuel and supplied by a company it co-owns with Russia’s Novatek, supplied Russian military bases, Reuters reported.
“No, TotalEnergies does not produce kerosene for the Russian military,” the company said in a statement.
Theater explosion in Mariupol
On March 16, Russian troops bombed the Drama Theater building in Mariupol, where more than 1,000 people, including children and pregnant mothers, were hiding.
Satellite images showed that before the bombing in Mariupol, “CHILDREN” was written in front and behind the theater.
An Associated Press investigation found evidence that the March 16 attack on the Mariupol theater killed nearly 600 people inside and outside the building.
