NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at the Crimean Platform summit on Tuesday that he expects a “difficult” winter and a “war of attrition” in Ukraine, so he asked the allies to “stand by Ukraine as long as necessary” in the face of the Russian invasion, according to reports EFE and Agerpres.

“Winter is coming and it will be hard. What we are seeing now is a battle of attrition. This is a battle of perseverance, logistics. Therefore, we need to support Ukraine in the long term, so that it remains a sovereign and independent state,” Stoltenberg noted.

“President (of the Russian Federation, Volodymyr) Putin thought he could crush the Ukrainian people and their armed forces, divide our democratic nations, dictate to others what to do. He was wrong,” said the NATO Secretary General in his speech, in which he also mentioned the significant military support provided to Ukraine by the Alliance countries.

He spoke at the second summit of the “Crimean Platform”, which was held on the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day and was attended by officials from about 50 countries around the world.

The first summit was organized last year on the same day at the initiative of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, who announced at the time that his country had developed a “de-occupation strategy” for the peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014, but “Ukraine alone will never be able to return Crimea , we will need effective international support’ to ‘free’ him.
