French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday urged the international community not to show “any weakness or spirit of compromise” towards Russia as the war in Ukraine enters its seventh month on Wednesday, AFP and Agerpres write.

“We cannot (…) have any weakness, any spirit of compromise, because at stake is the freedom of all of us and peace in all regions of the globe,” Macron said in a video address at the Crimea Platform International Summit, which unites the main countries that support Ukraine.

Many countries in Africa and Asia have adopted a policy of neutrality since Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine, an invasion they have refrained from condemning.

In Europe, some countries, such as Hungary, also maintain important ties with Russia, especially energy ties.

Emmanuel Macron again asked Russia to “cease hostilities, withdraw its troops from the entire territory of Ukraine and choose diplomacy to restore peace.”

Europeans are ready to support the “struggle” of Ukraine “in the long term”, added the French president to the attention of his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

“France and the European Union, together with many allies and friends of Ukraine, are doing everything necessary to support your struggle,” Macron said. “Our decision has not changed, and we are ready to support these efforts in the long term,” he emphasized.
