The fire that caused the explosion of ammunition occurred this morning at a Russian military base in Crimeapeninsula annexed Russiaaccording to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The fire broke out around 06:15 Greek time at a temporary ammunition depot at a Russian base in the Dzhankoy region in northern Crimea, the ministry said in a statement cited by Russian news agencies.
“After the fire, there was an explosion of ammunition,” he notes.
According to Crimean Governor Sergei Aksyonov, who arrived at the scene, two civilians were injured during the evacuation of residents of a neighboring village.
At 09:15 Greek time, the explosions continued, Aksyonov said on Telegram.
The incident occurred a week after the explosion of ammunition destined for the Air Force at a warehouse located near the Saki military airfield in the western part of Crimea.
As a result of these explosions, one person died and several were injured.
Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014, is at the forefront of Russia’s February 24 military offensive against neighboring Ukraine.
Russian aircraft fly out of Crimea on an almost daily basis to strike targets in areas controlled by Kyiv, with several areas of the area within range of Ukrainian guns and drones.
Despite the conflict, Crimea remains a popular holiday destination for many Russians who continue to enjoy summer on its beaches.
“The morning near Dzhankoy began with explosions,” Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the President of Ukraine, responded on Twitter.
“Crimea in a normal country is the Black Sea, mountains, recreation and tourism. But in Russian-occupied Crimea, ammunition depots are exploding and the risk of death for intruders and thieves is increasing,” he added.
