EU: Studying Iran’s reaction to ‘final text’ to save nuclear deal

Brussels ‘examines’ Iran’s response to ‘final text’ edited by Europe to keep the 2015 deal for nuclear envelope from Iran“in consultation with their partners,” a European Commission spokesman said today.

“We received Iran’s response on Monday evening, we are studying it and consulting with the rest of the partners in the deal (US, UK, China, France, Germany, Russia) on how to move forward,” he said. press secretary of the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borel.

Earlier, the official Iranian news agency Irna reported that Iran sent its response to the text.

“Iran submitted its written response to the draft Vienna Agreement and announced that an agreement would be reached if the United States responded realistically and flexibly,” Irna said.

After months of stalemate, talks resumed on August 4 in the Austrian capital in another attempt, under EU auspices, to salvage the international agreement reached in 2015 between Iran and, on the other hand, the US, UK, China. , France, Germany and Russia.

This agreement, known by the English acronym JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – JCPOA), aims to ensure the civilian nature of Iran’s nuclear program, which is accused of seeking nuclear weapons despite its denials.

But since the U.S. unilaterally pulled out of the deal in 2018 under former President Donald Trump and the reimposition of U.S. sanctions, Tehran has gradually breached its commitments.

The aim of the Vienna talks, in which the United States indirectly participates, is to get the process back on track.

On July 26, the head of European diplomacy and coordinator of the Iranian nuclear file, Josep Borrell, presented a compromise plan and called on the parties involved in the negotiations to accept it in order to avoid a “dangerous crisis.”

The head of Iranian diplomacy, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, said yesterday, Monday, that his country would announce its “final proposals” on the nuclear dossier by Tuesday.

“The differences relate to three points on which the US has twice expressed verbal flexibility, but this should be included in the text,” Irna added, without going into details.

“The third issue has to do with ensuring that the deal is sustainable, and it depends on the realism of the United States in appeasing Iran,” the agency said in a statement.

A State Department spokesman declined to say yesterday whether Washington was prepared to lift sanctions if a deal was struck with Iran.
