Ukraine plans to evacuate two-thirds of its residents from the territories it controls in eastern Donetsk region before winter, in part because of fears that people will not be able to stay warm due to war-damaged infrastructure, it said on Thursday. Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, Reuters reports.
The government in Kyiv plans to evacuate 220,000 out of approximately 350,000 people, including 52,000 children, Iryna Verestyuk said at a press conference.
At the end of last month, Ukraine announced the mandatory evacuation of the population from the Donetsk region, which was the scene of intense hostilities with Russia, in order to save the lives of civilians.
Although authorities describe the evacuation as “mandatory,” residents can remain in their homes by filling out a declaration of intent to stay.
According to Vereshchuk, 3,904 people were evacuated from August 1.
She said thousands of people will have to leave before winter sets in as the fighting has destroyed electricity and heating infrastructure.
