USA: Trump, the FBI and the 2024 election

FBI agents, equipped with the necessary warrant, on Monday, August 8, raided the private home of former US President Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago, Palm Beach, Florida.

Their mission is believed to have been to determine whether the 76-year-old Trump moved to his home secret documents he took with him when he left the White House. The reason is that the secret documents that the former president should have – by law – long ago returned to the US National Archives.

Recall that agents of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) visited Trump in Mar-a-Lago for the same reason a few months ago, in the spring of 2022.

But yesterday’s raid is now taking on new political dimensions as Trump seeks to use it for political purposes ahead of the next elections: the November midterm congressional elections and the 2024 presidential election.

According to American publications (Bloomberg, Politico, etc.), the raid of FBI agents on the private residence of the former US president is indeed something “unprecedented”.

The White House and President Joe Biden are said to have learned about Monday’s operation at the Trump mansion after the fact from reports and media reports.

The impartial American federal authorities, however, defend their actions as perfectly legal and in accordance with the procedures established by law.

Donald Trump himself, who was not present in Mar-a-Lago during the Aug. 8 raid, released a statement yesterday referring to the “siege”, “invasion” and “occupation” of his home by “a large group of FBI agents”.

After receiving a “pass” from the former president himself, supporters and politicians of the Republican Party in the last hours pounce on the “system”, which, they claim, declared “war” on them, thereby calling into question the credibility of the US federal government itself.

Trump supporters even held protests in the same context.

Even former US Vice President Mike Pence, who recently clashed with Trump, came out publicly and demanded an explanation from the authorities.

Analysts estimate that Trump himself, as well as the Republican Party, will rush to use the FBI raid to score points (but also resources – money from campaign donations) against the Democrats in view of the next election contests.

However, behind this instrumentalization lie the risks of new anti-democratic destabilizing social “explosions”.

It is recalled that in January 2021, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, refusing to recognize the result of the 2020 presidential election, which they declared a product of fraud, but in reality it was not.

Nearly two years later, the same people will now be pushed to believe that the “system” that “stole” the 2020 presidential election continues to “attack” the “anti-systemic” Trump.
