The interim government of Bulgaria, appointed to replace the government of former Prime Minister Kyril Petkov, who was dismissed after a vote of no confidence, admitted that the latter secretly sent weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, the deliveries were made through Poland, although the previous government had officially declared that Bulgaria did not supply weapons to Ukraine due to opposition to the Socialist Party, a formation that is considered pro-Russian, the EFE agency reported on Thursday, citing Agerpres.
Acting Minister of Economy Oleksandr Mykhaylov stated at a press conference on Thursday that since the beginning of the Russian military aggression against the country, about 4.2 thousand tons of military materials have been sent from Bulgaria to Ukraine.
“A large number of Bulgarian arms and ammunition were exported to Ukraine under Ninova’s signature,” the minister was quoted as saying, referring to his predecessor in the post, the socialist Cornelia Ninova, saying he had the documents as evidence but did not show them. .
The leader of the Socialist Party, Kornelia Ninova, threatened to dissolve the government coalition if any military aid to Ukraine, which was advocated by former pro-Western Prime Minister Kyryl Petkov, was approved.
In the end, the parliament in Sofia limited itself to approving “military-technical aid” to Ukraine in May, consisting mainly of military equipment repair and humanitarian aid.
Earlier, in April, Ninova fired Mykhaylov from the position of director of the state-owned company responsible for arms exports, following an alleged corruption case.
According to official data, this year Bulgaria exported weapons worth 504 million euros, which is more than a hundred times higher than in the same period last year.
