The former frontman of rock band The Police interrupted a concert at the National Stadium in the Polish capital Warsaw on Saturday night to warn his fans that democracy was under attack around the world after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Sting asked popular Polish actor Maciej Stur to come on stage during the show to translate his message: democracy is “in danger of being lost if we don’t protect it”.

“The alternative to democracy is a prison, a prison of the mind. The alternative to democracy is violence, oppression, imprisonment and silence,” said Sting.

During the performance, fans applauded the 70-year-old artist.

“The war in Ukraine is an absurdity based on lies. If we swallow these lies, the lies will eat us,” Sting also said in front of numerous fans at the National Stadium in Warsaw.

Sting is likely referring to the justifications Russia has tried to offer for its invasion, including the claim that it was aimed at “denazifying” Ukraine.

After his performance, Sting sang the song Fragile, the lyrics of which say that “nothing comes from violence and nothing ever can.”
