The US Treasury today included Alina Kabaeva in the list of sanctions that it imposed against Russia because of the war in Ukraine. The 39-year-old athlete was engaged in rhythmic gymnastics, became interested in politics and became a member of the ruling United Russia party. From time to time, information surfaced about her alleged affair with Vladimir Putin, which the Kremlin authority denies.
According to the US Department of the Treasury, Kabaeva is the head of the National Media Group (NMG), a media group that promotes the Kremlin’s positions.
This new package of sanctions also includes one of the world’s largest steel producers, the Public Joint Stock Company Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK), its main shareholder and chairman of the board. Viktor Filipovich Rasnikov and two of his subsidiaries (one of which is based in Turkey).
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said she will use every means at her disposal to ensure that Russian oligarchs who support the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine are held accountable.
Among the oligarchs currently under US sanctions is Andrey Guryev, who is said to be a close associate of Putin.
