Florida’s Supreme Court on Monday allowed a month into law signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, AFP reported.

However, in a separate ruling, Florida’s highest court upheld an amendment on the ballot in the U.S. election in November that would have guaranteed the right to an abortion in the southeastern state, a hot topic of the presidential campaign.

A citizen’s petition, which has reached the required number of signatures of 900,000 people, proposes an amendment to the Florida Constitution to “limit state intervention in abortion.”

The Supreme Court rejected Republican objections and “approved the inclusion of the proposed amendment on the ballot” in November’s presidential and legislative elections. If passed, the amendment would be added to the Florida Bill of Rights.

Democratic incumbent Joe Biden has made protecting abortion rights a key issue in his campaign against his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump. Trump is proud that, with his appointments to the US Supreme Court, he overturned a June 2022 case law that nullified the federal guarantee of abortion rights. After this decision, which gave the states complete freedom of legislative activity in this area, a number of 20 American states banned abortion.
