NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joane, former president of the PSD, said at the end of February that if he were to run for the post of President of Romania, he would run independently.

“When I say that if I run for office, I will run for office alone, I’m not saying that… I’m rather independent of parties. That doesn’t mean I won’t work with them,” Joanne said.

He also said that if he were to leave his post at NATO and go “to any other seat of political power or to NATO,” he would be sitting “at second zero in the place of influence that Romania deserves.”

“I went to a party, what else should I look for at a party? I’ve said it and I’ll say it again: according to all the numbers, according to all the polls, currently an independent candidate who can represent the whole nation, not just a party, has a better chance of winning the presidential election than a party candidate,” Joana also confirmed.

Joana does not give up her position in NATO

He also stated that while he holds this position, he will not announce his possible candidacy for the post of President of Romania.

He added that he will not leave the position he holds in the Alliance together with General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg.

The Deputy Secretary General of NATO said that the head of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, will leave his post on October 1, and the ceremony of his departure is being prepared for September 30.

“The problem that cannot happen this fall is that Jens Stoltenberg and I, His Excellency’s deputy, will leave at the same time. He leaves on October 1. So, to be able to ensure continuity and continuity at the top of the Alliance, sooner or later I will have to leave. Both options are on the table today,” Joane explained at the time.

He did not specify how long before or after Stoltenberg’s departure he would also leave his NATO post.
