Former president Trajan Basescu says that a scenario in which the PSD and the PNL would have a common presidential candidate would involve the “cancellation” of one of the parties. Regarding Mircea Joane, a possible candidate for Cotrocen, Basescu said that while everyone is under the impression that this will be the solution, it is not.

  • “In the PSD-PNL joint candidate version, one of the parties should be abolished. Let’s see what exactly. We discuss the PNL, the largest party on the right, and the PSD, the largest party on the left.
  • If someone does not have a candidate, he must go to the PEC and write “cancelled” in the register.
  • It is impossible, it is immoral, first of all, to say “let’s agree on the president.” Then why would we vote anyway? You cannot negotiate with the president,” Basescu said on Tuesday night on Digi 24, also criticizing the decision to combine European Parliament elections with local ones.

What Traian Basescu says about Mircea Joane, a candidate in the presidential elections

Traian Basescu says that in his opinion Mircea Joane is not the solution, “although everyone thinks he would be the solution”, and the political opponents of the current NATO Secretary General will remember all the controversial moments of his life.

In addition to the criminal problems of Ionuc Costea, Joane’s son-in-law, sentenced to prison, Basescu recalled the episode “with the watches obtained from Vangeli and taken to DNA” or “when he celebrated his daughter’s birthday on a yacht.” “So what does the profile of a socialist president look like?”, Besescu asked himself.

The ex-president also recalled that he defeated Mircea Joane twice in the elections, in the capital city hall, and then in the presidential elections.

“He says that these elections were stolen. Nobody stole them. Everyone supported him, big journalists supported him, the parties united against me, so as a result I had my representative only at the polling stations,” Basescu said.

On February 21, PSD and PNL agreed on the unification of the European and local parliaments and joint candidacies in the elections to the European Parliament. According to PSD and PNL calculations, the presidential elections will be postponed and will take place in September.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joane is still the front-runner in the presidential election as an independent candidate with 26.5%, followed by Marcel Çolaku with 18.9% and Diana Shoshoake with 14%, George Simion and Nicolae Chouke, according to a a survey conducted a month ago by INSCOP commissioned by News.ro.

In the version in which the ProRomania leader, former Prime Minister Viktor Ponta, would also run, the percentages would decrease especially for the PSD candidates Marcel Čolaku and AUR George Simon.
