On March 3, 2022, Maia Sandu signed the application for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union.

  • “Over these two years, we have taken decisive steps on the European path, and our continuous efforts have been rewarded with a positive decision to open accession negotiations, which is a clear signal that we are on the right track. Access to the EU means better conditions in schools and kindergartens, modernized roads, new bridges, equipped with modern hospital equipment, and most importantly, peace and security.
  • We have a lot of work ahead of us, but together we will be able to achieve all our goals. Together, we have the power to overcome any obstacles and build a better future for the Republic of Moldova in the big European family,” the President of the Republic of Moldova wrote on Facebook.

On December 14, at the height of the war started by Russia in Ukraine, the European Council decided to start negotiations on the accession of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to the European Union, as well as to grant the status of a candidate country for accession to Georgia.
