A German army soldier is suspected of shooting four people in the Rothenburg district of Lower Saxony before surrendering, police and prosecutors said on Friday, dpa reported, citing Agerpres.
Among the dead was a child who was found earlier on Friday.
There are two “crime scenes”, one in an isolated house in Westerwesede in the municipality of Schessel, and the other in Bothel in the district of Rothenburg.
The alleged perpetrator turned himself in after the attack Thursday night and was taken into custody, investigators said. According to the police, family problems “cannot be ruled out” as the cause of the crime.
A large contingent of law enforcement officers was involved in the crime scene.
DW notes that investigators were also present Friday morning at the Von Düring Kaserne barracks, where the soldier was, and that a black car parked in front of the facility appears to be the focus of their inquiries.
According to German media, the car contained ammunition and other materials that could be used to commit crimes.
