Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayeh’s government on Monday, according to a presidential statement quoted by AFP.
“The president issued a decree accepting the resignation and instructed Mohammed Shtaye and his government to temporarily remain in office until a new government is formed,” the presidency said.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayeh announced on Monday that he would resign in order to secure a broad consensus among Palestinians on a political settlement to be made after Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip, Reuters reported.
The move comes as the U.S. is mounting pressure on Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian National Authority (PA), which rules the West Bank, to reform the political organization to govern the Gaza Strip after the end of Gaza’s military operations against Hamas.
Mohammad Shtayeh is nominally the prime minister of both the Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, and the Palestinian state as a whole, which includes the Gaza Strip. But the de facto Palestinian Authority was driven out of Gaza by Hamas after the 2006 parliamentary elections, the last in the Palestinian enclave.
