Chelsea – Liverpool 0-1 (after extra time), in the final of the English League Cup

The leaders of the Premier League had to work hard to win the first trophy of the season.

In the final against Chelsea at Wembley in front of over 80,000, both sides lost their composure and had big chances.

The two goalkeepers, Djorje Petrovic and Caoimhin Kelleher, were the stars of the game and their providential interventions kept the score going until the end.

Each team also had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside: Sterling in the 33rd minute and van Dijk in the 60th minute.

It was a clean sheet after the first 90 minutes, with the goal that clinched the trophy coming two minutes into added time when Virgil van Dijk headed home Tsimikas’ corner.

For Liverpool, this is the tenth English League Cup trophy in history, the previous one was won in the 2021-2022 season.
