The head of Romanian diplomacy took part in an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels (Anthem).

“The fact that we will no longer launch new voluntary contribution procedures for UNRWA does not mean that we will no longer support Palestinian civilians who are in an extremely, extremely difficult situation. The needs of Palestinian civilians will continue to be a priority for Romania, for the Romanian government. And this is very important to emphasize,” Odobescu said.

She showed that our country will coordinate with partners in this file.

“We also exchanged views on the situation in Gaza, and Romania’s position is known. In this case, I again emphasized the importance of close coordination of our efforts, international efforts to advance a lasting peace in the Middle East. (…) Regarding the allegations against some UNRWA staff, Romania’s position is very clear – I supported the importance of a quick and serious investigation. Until this investigation is completed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not launch new voluntary contribution procedures, but the needs of Palestinian civilians will remain a priority for Romania. It should be very clear,” emphasized Luminica Odobescu.

She reported that currently there are no more appeals to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Romanian citizens in the region.

Following Israeli accusations that some of its staff were involved in the October 7 Hamas attack, the EU announced it would review its support for UNRWA. While some see it as an urgent measure, others warn of collective punishment against the Palestinian people, the European Newsroom media platform reported on Friday.
