British billionaire Joe Lewis plans to plead guilty to some US criminal charges after being charged with insider trading last year, his lawyer said at a hearing in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
Lewis, 86, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and two counts of securities fraud, David Zornow, Lewis’ attorney, told U.S. District Judge Jessica Clark.
Lewis, whose family foundation controls a majority of the Tottenham Hotspur soccer team, was charged in July 2023 with passing inside information about his portfolio companies to two of his private pilots, as well as friends, personal assistants and romantic partners, allowing them, prosecutors said, to make millions of dollars in profit.
Pilots Patrick O’Connor and Brian Waugh were also charged. All three men pleaded not guilty last July.
Federal prosecutors charged Lewis with 16 counts of securities fraud and three counts of conspiracy for alleged crimes that occurred between 2013 and 2021.
He founded the investment firm Tavistock Group and has a fortune of $6.2 billion, according to Forbes. Lewis was allowed to remain free on $300 million bail secured by his Aviva yacht and his private jets.
Bail conditions prohibit Lewis from leaving the United States, boarding his yacht or traveling on his private jet, except for a court hearing.
Lewis is prohibited from traveling between New York, Florida and Georgia, where he owns property.
Prosecutors said Lewis obtained inside information about four companies he invested in through his hedge fund.
Manhattan federal prosecutor Damian Williams called Lewis’ actions “classic corporate corruption.”
