The target date for adopting the euro is “not sacrosanct”, Nikolay Denkov said during a discussion on Bulgarian radio station Darik alongside Deputy Prime Minister Maria Gabriel, the current foreign affairs chief who will replace him as prime minister in the government. rotation contract.

Denkov did not rule out that joining the Eurozone could take place later – on July 1, 2025.

“What is holy is to have a clear direction and work towards it. We, in the government, are convinced that this is beneficial for the business environment, for citizens, for strengthening control over banks and financial institutions,” Denkov said.

At the same time, the prime minister emphasized that the current ruling coalition is doing everything possible to speed up the process of joining the euro.

Bulgaria abandoned its January 2024 target date for the introduction of the euro last year because inflation was not up to par and it had not yet implemented certain legislative changes.

“This date is when all the Maastricht criteria will be fulfilled. Perhaps January 1, 2025 would be a possible date,” said Vice President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis last February.
