According to Reuters, the Palestinian Red Crescent accused Israel of shelling a hospital in Khan Younis on Friday, as a major offensive on the main city in the southern Gaza Strip threatened the few medical facilities still in operation.
The Red Crescent said the displaced were injured “due to intense Israeli drone fire on citizens of Al-Amal Hospital” as well as the rescue agency’s base. The military said it was investigating the report.
Nearby, in the same city, Israeli tanks were also closing in on Gaza’s largest operating hospital, Nasser, where people said they heard artillery fire coming from the west. Residents also reported heavy gunfire in the south.
Israel this week launched a major new offensive on Khan Younis to capture the town it says is now the main base for Hamas militants who attacked Israeli cities on October 7, accelerating the war that has devastated the Gaza Strip.
Gaza’s health ministry said 142 Palestinians were killed and 278 wounded in Gaza in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll after more than three months of war in the area to 24,762.
The World Health Organization said most of the enclave’s 36 hospitals had stopped working. According to the organization, only 15 are partially operational, and they are operating at three times their normal capacity, without enough fuel or medical supplies.
