Justice Minister Alina Gorgiu, a liberal, says that representatives of the government coalition are “not allowed” to “trench the nerves” of Romanians with four types of elections in 2024, and that organizing several rounds of elections involves high costs. In addition, she says, voter fatigue can lead to absenteeism.

“As someone who has seen many campaigns in Romanian politics since 2001, I tell you that we, who are now in the government coalition, are not allowed to stress the nerves of Romanians with four types of elections in 2024. And so I think we have to be honest with the citizens and tell them that we have priorities that can be overshadowed if we focus too much on so many election campaigns and elections,” Senator Alina Gorgiou said at the conference. press

In this context, the Minister of Justice also referred to the high costs of organizing these elections, as well as the fatigue of the electorate and possible absenteeism.

“I would be happy if in February we find a wise solution, and I hope (…) to find an agreed, consensual solution at the coalition level to eliminate all these problems that can be created in an election year, an election that always involves a certain level of social unrest, strikes, protests, we all see that, but it also involves quite high costs. (…) This year we are talking about 3.8 billion lei, which are spent on organizing and holding these elections in good conditions. Not to mention that these savings would be desirable in the state budget, and as an additional argument, I think we could avoid electorate fatigue and possible absenteeism until the end of the year,” said Minister Alina Gorgiou.
