The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia said that the Russian side was informed of the desire to carry out repair work at the busiest border crossing between the two countries, AFP reports.
Tallinn authorities said they had received an official note from Russia saying that the Narva-Ivangorod crossing would be closed to traffic from February 1, and that repairs planned by Moscow would take two years.
“According to the note, it is planned that the repair works will last until the end of 2025. We will see what will happen in reality,” Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna told reporters.
“For our part, we will continue our work at the border as usual,” he added.
However, this crossing, which connects Narva, Estonia’s third largest city, with its Russian neighbor Ivangorod, will remain open to pedestrian traffic.
The common border between Estonia and Russia is 333 kilometers, and 5 more checkpoints will remain open after the closure of Narva-Ivanhorod.
Last November, Estonia warned its citizens against “any travel” to Russia, saying it could close the border due to an influx of migrants similar to the one at the Russian-Finnish border.
