Although Romania was due to be represented by four players in the main draw of the 2024 Australian Open, Iryna Begu has announced that she will not play in the January edition.

Iryna Begu will not participate in the Australian Open-2024

In a story on her Instagram page, Iryna Begu posted a photo on a field in Melbourne, accompanied by the message “Australia, I will miss you. See you in 2025.”

Begu, who is ranked 75th in the WTA rankings, last played in August at the US Open, where she was eliminated in the first round by Tamara Korpatsch.

Due to an elbow injury, the athlete will miss the start of the new season, even if she recovers.

Kirstya, Bohdan and Christian in the main draw of the Australian Open

Sorana Kirstea (26 WTA), Ana Bohdan (69 WTA) and Jacqueline Christian (89 WTA) will perform in the main draw of Melbourne.

Simona Halep is out of the Australian Open for the second straight year pending a decision on her CAS case.

Romania has four more representatives in the qualifiers, which will begin on January 8.

Gabriela Rousse (128 WTA), Andrea Mitu (218 WTA), Iryna Bara (184 WTA) and Miriam Bulgaru (194) can also reach the main draw if they play well.

The 2024 Australian Open will be held from January 14 to 28. The reigning champions are Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenko.
