British Cameron Norrie (18 ATP) won against Australian Alex de Minaur (12 ATP) in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/2). De Minaur’s friend Katie Boulter (56 WTA) brought Great Britain’s second point.
She defeated Aila Tomljanovic (290 WTA) 6-2, 6-4, who missed most of last season with a knee injury that required surgery.
The no stakes doubles match pits Britain’s Katie Boulter and Neil Skupski against Australia’s Storm Hunter and Matthew Ebden.
As announced, Spain defeated Brazil 2-1 on Friday in the opening match of the United Cup.
In the singles matches of this Group A, Alejandro Davidovic (26 ATP) defeated Thiago Seibot Wilde (79 ATP) 6-4, 6-0, and Beatrice Haddad-Maya (11 WTA) defeated Sarah Sorribes (48 WTA) 7-6 (1 ), 6-2.
In the decisive doubles match, the Spanish pair of Alejandro Davidovic/Sara Sorribes defeated the Brazilian pair of Marcelo Melo/Beatrice Haddad-Maya with a score of 6-4, 7-5.
The United Cup, which replaced the former Hopman Cup, features 18 nations in six groups, with matches in Perth and Sydney.
The Czech Republic – China and Poland – Brazil matches will be held in Perth on Saturday, and the Netherlands – Norway and Italy – Germany matches are scheduled for Sydney.
The top-placed teams in the six groups and the two best second-placed teams advance to the quarterfinals, scheduled for January 3-5. The semi-finals will be held on January 6 in Sydney, and the final on January 7, also in Sydney, Agerpres reports.
The prize pool is $10 million.
