“2024 will be a decisive year for what Romania will look like in the future,” President Klaus Iohannis said in his National Day message, referring to next year’s election marathon. The head of state drew attention to the danger of extremism.
“The results of this veritable election marathon will determine the course our nation will take in the coming years. Participating in all rounds of elections in a year that marks three and a half decades since the December Revolution of 1989 will be a serious test of our democratic maturity. Let’s not forget that the path to freedom and democracy was long and difficult and involved huge sacrifices on the part of many generations. Because of them, today we have the fundamental right to vote, the only democratic tool by which we determine the course of our country. Therefore, we are obliged to protect the future of the nation and at the same time remain vigilant in the face of extremist currents, which, if we are not careful enough, can become a real threat to the basic principles of our society and our value system. “, the head of state said.
PSD-PNL government, “no toxic blockades”
Klaus Iohannis also praised the current PSD-PNL coalition, which he said had ensured a “stable government” during a difficult period marked by “serious crises”, culminating in the war on Romania’s border with Ukraine.
“But even if these crises are not over, we can confidently say that we managed to keep the economy healthy, encourage investments, and ensure the safety of our citizens. And all this would be impossible if we did not have a stable government, without toxic political blocs, even if this government can also be criticized. “Without government coherence, it would be much more difficult to overcome the many crises we face,” the president said.
The head of state also talked about the advantages of Romania’s membership in NATO, saying that our country is a safe country.
“Romania is a safe country and its citizens have no reason to fear. Our membership in the North Atlantic Alliance gives us the strongest security guarantees, and the presence of allied troops on the territory of our country is proof of our commitment to ensuring the stability and defense of our region,” the president said.
