Sergio Perez called F1 stewards a “joke” after fine at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Perez received a five-second penalty after colliding with Lando Norris (McLaren) and was demoted to fourth despite finishing second.
Sergio expressed his displeasure over the team radio: “The stewards are a joke, man. OH MY GOD. They’ve made a lot of bad decisions this year, but that’s a joke. It was really a joke.”
The stewards summoned the driver to a hearing after the race and gave him a warning.
“The stewards explained to the driver that they have no problem with anyone disagreeing with their decisions, but comments that constitute personal insults are a breach of the International Sporting Code,” the F1 stewards said in a statement.
They said Peres offered a “sincere and sincere apology” to each of them, explaining that he made the comments in the heat of the moment and did not think they would be broadcast to a wider audience.
“Commissioners also note that the pilot is not known for such comments and has always been extremely respectful at hearings. The pilot, team manager and stewards had a constructive discussion regarding the use and transmission of team radio messages.
The incident itself was also discussed in detail with the pilot and although he did not agree with the decision, he stated that he could understand the stewards’ point of view,” the stewards added.
