The Jordanian army has increased its presence on the border with Israel, its prime minister said. According to Sky News, Bisher Hassouneh said his country would use “all possible means” if Israel tried to force Palestinians in the West Bank to cross the Jordan River.
He said expelling the Palestinians would violate the peace agreement between Israel and its neighbor.
The US has previously called on Israel to reduce settler violence in the West Bank, fearing a wider conflict.
“Any movement or creation of conditions that would lead to this will be considered by Jordan as a declaration of war and a significant violation of the peace treaty,” state media quoted Hasaune as saying, referring to the 1994 peace treaty with Israel.
According to him, the recent deployment of troops along Israel’s borders is part of measures to protect the country’s security.
In recent days, residents and eyewitnesses have seen large convoys of armored vehicles and tanks moving along the main road leading to the Jordan Valley, opposite the West Bank.
