Social media company X CEO Linda Jaccarino told employees that “data will tell the real story” about its efforts to combat anti-Semitism, according to a memo to employees amid growing outrage over the issue, AFP reported.
X, formerly Twitter, has lost several major advertisers, including IBM and Comcast, and owner Elon Musk has come under fire from the White House after agreeing to publish on the platform on Wednesday.
The post falsely claimed that Jews incite hatred against whites. On Thursday, media watchdog Media Matters also said it had discovered that ads from major brands were appearing alongside posts promoting Nazism.
“While some advertisers may have temporarily suspended investment due to a misleading and manipulated article, the data will tell the truth,” Jaccarino said in a Sunday evening memo to employees seen by Reuters, adding that X was clearly trying to combat anti-Semitism and discrimination.
Over the weekend, Musk posted on X that his firm would file a “thermonuclear” lawsuit against Media Matters for what he called a “fraudulent attack” on the platform. A representative for X confirmed that the firm will file a lawsuit against the nonprofit, possibly as soon as Monday.
In response on Monday, Media Matters president Angelo Carusone said: “Musk is not the defender of free speech he claims to be, but a bully who threatens ridiculous lawsuits to try to silence a story that is even proven to be correct. Musk has acknowledged that the ad in question is running alongside the pro-Nazi content we discovered.”
The dispute comes amid rising anti-Semitism in many countries, including the United States, following the October 7 attack by Hamas in southern Israel and the subsequent bombing and invasion of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli military.
After purchasing Twitter in October 2022 for $44 billion, Musk laid off thousands of employees, including many who worked on moderating content on the platform.
