Luxembourg’s former finance minister Luc Frieden will become the country’s new prime minister, but former prime minister Xavier Bettel, who led the country for 10 years, will remain in the government in an important position, Reuters reports.

Frieden’s Christian Socialist Party (CSV), Luxembourg’s traditional centre-right party, won parliamentary elections last month, leaving Bettel’s former coalition of liberals, socialists and greens without a legislative majority.

But after nearly 6 weeks of negotiations, CSV reached an agreement on Thursday to form a coalition with Bettel’s Democratic Party. Both parties together hold 35 of the 60 seats in the Luxembourg parliament.

As part of the deal, Bettel will remain in a senior position in the new cabinet, serving as foreign minister.

Bettel has served as Prime Minister of Luxembourg since 2013, becoming in 2018 the first gay head of government in the world to be elected to a second term.

Frieden, 60, held several important ministerial posts between 1998 and 2013, when his party was in power. A lawyer by profession, an economist, he was alternately the minister of justice, defense and finance.

He held his first ministerial position during the government of Jean-Claude Juncker, who later became the president of the European Commission. Frieden also served as the head of the World Bank for 15 years.
