Indy Gregory, an eight-month-old British girl in critical condition who was taken off a ventilator over the weekend, died overnight, a lawyer for her family said on Monday, Reuters reported.

Last month, Gregory’s parents lost a legal battle to keep her on life support and transfer her to the Vatican Children’s Hospital in Rome.

The baby died at 01:45 GMT, Simona Pillon, a former Italian lawmaker and conservative Catholic activist who represents the Gregory family, wrote on social media platform X.

Indy suffered from a rare, incurable, degenerative mitochondrial disease which meant her cells did not produce enough energy. The doctors said that she was in a lot of pain and there was no point in continuing the treatment.

The English courts have ruled in their favor, the latest decision being handed down on Friday. On Saturday, the child was transferred from a hospital in Nottingham, central England, to a hospice where she was taken off the machine.

Last week, the Italian government granted the child Italian citizenship to prevent him from being disconnected from his devices and allow him to move to Italy.

Pope Francis addressed the case on Saturday, saying in a statement that he is praying for the girl, her family and all children suffering from war and disease.
