With exactly one year to go before the 2024 US presidential election, a New York Times poll published on Sunday shows presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump ahead of incumbent President Joe Biden in five of six key states, with the Democrat losing ground among young and representatives of minorities. AFP reports.
According to the New York Times/Siena College poll, Trump leads Biden in voting intentions in Nevada (52% to 41%), Georgia (49% to 43%), Arizona (49% to 44%), Michigan (48% to 43 %), Pennsylvania (48% vs. 44%), while the incumbent would win in Wisconsin (47% vs. 45%).
Biden won each of those six contested states in 2020.
The poll was conducted by telephone between Oct. 22 and Nov. 3 among 3,662 registered voters in six states and has a margin of error of 4.4 to 4.8 points, depending on the state.
However, this trend is not in favor of Joe Biden: 67% of those polled believe that the country is moving in the wrong direction, 59% disapprove of how Biden is performing his role as president (of which 46% strongly disapprove), and 71% % I believe that at age 80, a Democrat is “too old to be an effective president.”
Joe Biden is losing ground especially among young people: only 41% of 18-29-year-olds say they will definitely or probably vote for him, 40% prefer Donald Trump.
“The demographic groups that overwhelmingly supported Biden in 2020 are much more controversial today,” especially among the Hispanic and African-American communities, the New York Times wrote.
Biden’s team quickly tried to downplay the poll results. “A year ahead projections tend to look a little different a year from now,” said Kevin Munoz, a spokesman for the Biden-Harris 2024 campaign.
He cited a poll that had President Barack Obama down one point before his 2012 re-election or the 2022 midterms, which were predicted to be disastrous for Joe Biden but in which Democrats managed to limit losses.
