The European Commission responded on Sunday to a rise in anti-Semitic incidents in Europe, saying the EU is determined to protect the welfare of all its communities – ethnic, religious or otherwise.
“Over the past few days, the sheer number of anti-Semitic incidents in Europe has reached an unprecedented level, recalling some of the darkest moments in history. Today, European Jews once again live in fear.
We are seeing a resurgence of anti-Semitic incidents and rhetoric in the European Union and around the world: Molotov cocktails thrown at a synagogue in Germany, stars of David painted on residential buildings in France, a Jewish cemetery desecrated in Austria, attacks on Jewish shops and synagogues in Spain, demonstrators chanting hateful slogans against Jews.
In these difficult times, the European Union supports its Jewish communities.
We strongly condemn these despicable actions. They are against everything that Europe stands for. Against our fundamental values and our way of life. Against the model of society we represent: a society based on equality, inclusion and full respect for human rights. Jews, Muslims, Christians – no one should fear discrimination or violence because of their religion or identity. The EU is determined to protect the well-being of all its communities, whether ethnic, religious or otherwise.”This was announced by the European Commission.
We must confront this rise in anti-Semitism, as well as the anti-Muslim hatred we have witnessed in recent weeks, which has no place in Europe,” the press release said.
“We already have powerful tools at our disposal to counter such incidents: EU law criminalises public incitement to hatred and violence and establishes a common approach to combating racist and xenophobic speech and crime.
Ensuring its strict compliance is now more important than ever. And from 2021, the European Union has its first comprehensive strategy to combat anti-Semitism and promote Jewish life, as well as, from 2020, an EU action plan against racism.
In cooperation with member states, we will continue to strengthen security measures. We have already increased EU funding to protect places of worship and other spaces, and we are working to get more support. In parallel, we are strengthening enforcement of relevant legislation to ensure that online platforms respond quickly and effectively to anti-Semitic or anti-Muslim content online, be it terrorist content, hate speech or misinformation.
It is our shared responsibility as Europeans to condemn and oppose hatred in all its forms.”added in the European Commission. [Sursa: News.ro]
