Turkish police fired tear gas on Sunday to break up a pro-Palestinian demonstration near a military base housing US troops and weapons, AFP and News.ro reported.
The demonstration in front of the Incirlik Air Base was organized by the Turkish non-governmental organization Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH). In 2010, IHH chartered a flotilla to try to reach Israel’s blockade of Gaza, leading to an Israeli raid that killed ten people.
Images posted on social media showed several hundred people waving Palestinian flags, running across a field, chased by police, who also fired water cannons.
No injuries or arrests have been reported yet.
Incirlik Air Base is owned by Turkey, a NATO member, but is used by the US Air Force and occasionally the British Royal Air Force, giving them strategic access to vast areas of the Middle East.
On Saturday, Turkey recalled its ambassador from Israel for consultations and cut off contacts with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in response to Israel’s operation in Gaza.
