Statistics compiled by the Roads Department of the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police and released on Sunday show a decrease in the number of serious road accidents and the number of people killed or seriously injured as a result of these events.

The value of three indicators – the number of traffic accidents, the number of fatalities and the number of seriously injured – according to the employees of the traffic police, are the lowest in the last ten years.

“Although statistics show that the number and consequences of road accidents are decreasing, the dramas that take place on the country’s roads each time have a special impact. Compared to the same period in 2022, there were 4% fewer crashes this year, 9% fewer fatalities and 5% fewer serious injuries, according to the latest analysis by the Highways Department. In addition, the value of 3 recorded indicators is the lowest in the last 10 years,” Chief Commissioner Cristian Andris of the Roads Directorate of the Romanian Police announced in a press statement on Sunday.

According to them, the analyzes carried out at the institution level indicate that the main causes of serious road accidents are non-observance of the legal speed limit, indiscipline of pedestrians, indiscipline of cyclists and failure to give the right of way. way.

Large-scale traffic police actions took place from October 23 to 29 and from October 9 to 15. Tens of thousands of drivers were checked, some of them were fined.

Thus, according to the data released on Sunday, from October 23 to 29, more than 800 crimes were solved and more than 23,500 types of punishment were applied, 32,728 drivers were checked for alcohol intoxication, and 1,811 drivers were tested for drug use.

According to the results of the checks, 179 offenses were found for driving vehicles while intoxicated and another 115 for driving vehicles while intoxicated.

From October 9 to 15, 2023, more than 67,000 vehicles were checked, more than 14,500 offenses were applied and 436 violations of traffic rules were detected as part of the “Focus attention on the road” campaign.

Of these, 11,773 were not wearing seat belts by drivers or passengers, 2,421 were using a mobile phone, and 367 were other distractions.
