At least 22 people were killed and dozens injured in a powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Nepal on Friday night. The earthquake was also felt in New Delhi in India, according to Reuters.
Nepal’s National Seismological Center said the earthquake struck at 11:47 p.m. local time (8:02 p.m. in Romania) in Jajarkot district of Karnali province. Jajarkot is located approximately 500 kilometers west of the capital Kathmandu.
A local official told Reuters by phone that he knew of at least 20 wounded people who had been rushed to hospital. “I went out too. We are collecting information, but because of the night and the cold, it is more difficult to get it from certain areas,” he said.
Local media broadcast images of collapsed facades of multi-story brick buildings.
According to local residents, the earthquake was also felt in neighboring areas, including as far as Kathmandu.
“Destroyed houses. People left their homes in panic. I’m outside among a crowd of terrified locals. We are trying to find out the details of the damage,” a police representative told Reuters by phone.
The earthquake wave was felt as far as New Delhi, the capital of India, located about 600 kilometers away, Reuters reported, citing eyewitnesses in the area.
