After weeks of trying to find a new speaker of the House of Representatives, American Republicans have agreed to name Tom Emmer as their candidate for the post, AFP reports.

But the candidacy of this resident of Minnesota, the voice of the party establishment, already seems doomed.

The third-ranked Republican in the House, whose fundraising prowess is widely recognized, emerged victorious in a series of internal polls against eight other candidates.

However, more than two dozen members of his own camp have already made it clear they will not support him in the vote, even though Republicans hold only a slim majority in the House of Representatives.

Donald Trump’s allies oppose him because he is one of two men among nine presidential candidates who voted to confirm Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

Therefore, they believe that Tom Emmer is not loyal to the former president.

Without a speaker, the House also cannot make a decision on President Joe Biden’s request to send emergency aid to Israel and Ukraine.

Nearly three weeks after the historic ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the infighting among Republicans continues to play out.

“This is probably one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen,” Republican Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul told ABC News on Sunday.

“Because if we don’t have a Speaker of the House, we won’t be able to govern. And every day we are actually being closed down as a government,” he added.

Last week, Judiciary Committee leader Jim Jordan, an ally of former President Donald Trump, appeared on the verge of ending the party’s increasingly awkward search.

In the end, he lost the vote three times because he was seen as a leader who was too close to Trump and too radical. Republicans then withdrew their support, announcing they would meet on Monday to name a new candidate for speaker.
