Dr. Jamila Al-Shanti founded the women’s wing of Hamas in Gaza and was the first female member of its politburo, according to Hamas.

According to The Palestine Chronicle, Al-Shanti, who had a doctorate in English, was among several women elected in 2006 on the Hamas electoral list.

She was the widow of Hamas co-founder Abdel Aziz Al-Rantisi.
