Russia said Thursday that the United States’ decision to block a UN resolution calling for a “humanitarian pause” between Hamas and Israel would have “terrible consequences” in terms of civilian casualties, AFP reported.

“In the context of the confrontation, which is gaining momentum and risks going beyond the borders of the Middle Eastern region and acquiring a confessional color, the consequences of such an action are dire,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Calling it “disappointing” that the resolution, which could have helped “stop the escalation of tensions and reduce violence against civilians,” was not adopted, Moscow said the US veto “clearly demonstrates Washington’s true aspirations for the Middle East region.”

“Every day of delay means not only a rapid increase in the number of dead and wounded, but also the continuation of the suffering of civilians trapped in the blockaded enclave (Gaza),” Russian diplomacy continued.

He accused Washington of being “against any humanitarian initiative from the beginning” and reiterated that the conflict between Israel and Hamas reflects “the failure of American policy” in the region, which “led to the current catastrophic escalation.”

“The right to self-defense does not mean permission for massive and indiscriminate repression,” the Russian ministry added, veiledly criticizing Israel.

On Wednesday, 12 of the 15 member states of the UN Security Council voted in favor of the resolution presented by Brazil.

Two abstained, including Russia, but the US, one of the five permanent members, voted against it, enough to block its passage.
