Actress Jada Pinkett Smith announced on Wednesday that she has separated from her husband Will Smith since 2016, and the couple is regularly in the media spotlight, writes AFP.

The Smiths especially made headlines in 2022 when the Men in Black actor punched comedian Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars over a questionable joke about his wife’s hair loss.

Banned from the Oscars for 10 years after he himself walked out of the Academy, Will Smith publicly apologized to Chris Rock.

In 2022, the couple, who remained legally married, had been living “completely separate lives” for several years, Jada Pinkett Smith told NBC, according to an excerpt from the interview, which is aimed at promoting the actress’ upcoming memoir, Worthy.

The actress also explained that at first she thought it was a joke when her husband hit Chris Rock and did not understand his violent reaction.

Over the years, the couple faced constant rumors of adultery or an open marriage.

“We love each other deeply, and we’re trying to figure out what that means to us,” Jada Pinkett Smith explained in an interview with People magazine.

The two celebrities met in 1994 on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, when Will Smith was already married.
