Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi says it is “a bit strange” when countries that are part of NATO and the European Union (EU) support Russia’s narrative. Asked if he was worried about the wave of populism in the EU, he said people were free to vote for whoever they wanted because “that’s the beauty of democracy”.
Zelenskyi says that everyone can vote freely, but in the case of war in his country, the choice is simple: either you support Ukraine or Russia.
“People can vote for anything. People are free, they are free to vote for any person and any party. This is the beauty of democracy. It’s a bit strange. When you want to be in the European Union, have shared values with the European Union, be part of NATO and say yes, we are NATO, we are allies, and see that some people support the Russian narrative. Because you cannot mediate these things.
Either you support Russia or you support Ukraine. It’s a choice. It’s okay for some people to choose one path and others to choose another, but you can’t be honest, you can’t be honest in the European Union, be in NATO, have Patriot missiles, F-16s, F-35s that you didn’t produce . What did you do for this protection?” – said the President of Ukraine in an interview with several Romanian TV channels, quoted by News.ro.
According to him, Russia decided to attack Ukraine precisely because the country it leads is not a member of NATO. The President of Ukraine noted that those who support Russia in this war should also be against NATO and the EU.
- “I know the price of this protection. The price is lost human lives. These people who see things this way do not understand how high the price is and cannot appreciate what they have, that is, the value of what they have already received. People do not understand what NATO means, what the European Union means, what the Alliance means. I don’t understand that I get technology, I get security. We are not in the European Union, we are not in NATO, we understand the price. The price of this war. Russia attacked us because we are not in NATO, we are not in the European Union. We just wanted to be independent.
- To such people who support Russia and think they understand, they are not sincere. Otherwise, it should be against NATO and against the European Union, against everything that Russia opposes. And this is important to understand,” Zelenskyi said.
Volodymyr Zelenskyi visited Romania on Tuesday. He met with the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, as well as with the Prime Minister Marcel Čolaku and the heads of the two chambers of the Parliament Nicolae Chuke and Alfred Simonis.
