On Thursday, the mayor will appear in court with an application for preventive arrest.
Ion Georgescu, who has been in office since 2006, is accused of demanding a €30,000 bribe, of which he received €10,000, from a doctor for interfering with his work at a hospital in Mioveni, court sources told HotNews.ro.
The mayor arrived at DNA headquarters for the hearing Wednesday night. When asked by a journalist why he was being accused, the mayor replied: “I didn’t take, I gave,” without giving any other explanation, Digi24 reports.
The mayor demanded a 30,000 euro bribe from a doctor whom he promised to help get a job at a hospital in Mioven. He received 10,000 euros from this money. Since he did not decide on the employment of the doctor who bribed him, Ion Georgescu had to return the money to him.
Georgescu was caught red-handed by prosecutors on Wednesday night at Mioveni City Hall headquarters, where he was returning €10,000 to a doctor.
The hospital in Mioveni is the first in Romania built from scratch in the last 30 years. His reception took place in September 2019, but even now the unit is not working with all branches open. The hospital in Mioven has 6 floors, 250 beds and numerous departments, including an emergency department, an intensive care unit and an operating theater with 4 rooms.
The construction of the City Hospital in Mioven started in March 2016, the funding was fully provided by the PNDL program, the investment was 68 million euros.
According to a report published by Digi 24 in September, the hospital has 23 wards, but only nine are open, and job vacancies have been canceled during the pandemic.
“The situation is hopeless. The mayor said that there may be no money. Of course, medicine is expensive, and especially drugs for infectious diseases and resuscitation are very expensive. The expenses we had were with many zeros,” said hospital director Horia Traila.
Ion Georgescu (age 63) has led the city of Mioveni since 2006, when he received his first mandate as mayor. Until 2006, he was the deputy head of the village for 6 years.
From 1985 to 2000, Ion Georgescu worked at the Automobile Dacia-Renault plant, according to his resume, as a “canteen manager.”
The mayor’s resume includes the following studies:
- Master of Financial Business Management, University of Craiova
- He graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, majoring in management, at the University of Craiova
- IHR Professional Trade School, Bucharest;
- Pitesti Economic Secondary School
However, he does not mention the period in which he conducted these studies, noting in his resume that they are listed “in chronological order.”
Georgescu has been a PSD member since October 1998, according to his resume. He is the vice-president of PSD Argeș and the president of the PSD branch in Mioveni.
The PSD Arges organization decided, shortly after the scandal, to expel Georgescu from the party.
