At least 13 people died early Sunday in a fire that broke out at a disco in the southeastern Spanish city of Murcia, with the death toll expected to rise as emergency teams continue to search under the rubble, AFP reported.

The fire, which broke out around 06:00 local time at the disco on Calle Atalayas in Murcia, an area with several nightclubs, happened inside and was extremely serious, according to the city’s mayor, Jose Ballesta.

Firefighters managed to extinguish it, but there are still corpses under the rubble, their extraction is complicated due to the risk of the structure collapsing, the mayor explains.

The circumstances of the tragedy are still unknown, but now the authorities are talking about three discos engulfed in flames and located nearby, but all the victims are in one, the Fonda Milagros disco.

The policeman said that 15 people are considered missing, but among them may have already been declared dead or taken by ambulances. Another four people were poisoned by smoke inhalation.

The fire broke out early in the morning at the Teatre nightclub in the Atalayas district, emergency services reported on the X social platform.

“Emergency services confirm six deaths at the Teatre nightclub,” Mayor Jose Ballesta wrote on X, adding that an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the fire.

Four people were injured, two women aged 22 and 25, respectively, and two men aged 41 and 45, respectively, who were poisoned by the smoke.

Firefighters and emergency crews continued to search for survivors Sunday morning and warned that the death toll could rise.
